Leadership Part 2

Dreaming – Vision

DO NOT GIVE UP
David was anointed King, killed Goliath, worked for Saul and killed tens of thousands – he was having a good day and then God put him in the training field. Saul wanted to kill David – jealousy…. David did not waiver in his knowledge that the Lord had called him to be King. He let the trials drive him deeper into relationship with God.

David knew the call of God on his life… do you? Most of us don’t know exactly what we are called to but… is there something in you that KNOWS…. I WAS BORN TO CHANGE THE WORLD?

“Great men are ordinary men who never give up.” – Matthew Barnett

Attitude & Self Discipline
• Determines what you see and how you handle your feelings.
• You are the only person you can control. Most leaders who fail, fail because of self control.
• Tackle little by little, not all at once.
• Take responsibility for yourself and your actions.
• God is happy to show you areas in your thinking that need to change to line up with his. Until we see the way He sees, life is overwhelming.
• We need to see from Heaven to Earth instead of Earth to Heaven.

How Do You Know What To Do? How Do You Change?
First of all, I believe that ALL young people have a desire in their heart to obey God. From that desire we cry out, “God I love you… I just want to live for you…. My life is yours God, etc.” And then God responds… because He believes what we say… so He starts the process.

“Young people, don’t spend your lives worrying about what you will do, what you will be, what you will accomplish. Wit for Him and He will supply all that you need. God will take care of every need if you put Him first.” – Matthew Barnett

And that’s where it all seems to fall apart! If you don’t understand how God moves in your life and why, you will spend most of your time fight Him and blaming others.

God promised to send us the “Helper” when He left and He did. The Holy Spirit is here to guide us into God’s presence, making us more like Him, our ultimate goal, if we will let Him.

John 14:26-27 (New Century Version)

26 But the Helper will teach you everything and will cause you to remember all that I told you. This Helper is the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name.

27 “I leave you peace; my peace I give you. I do not give it to you as the world does. So don’t let your hearts be troubled or afraid.

Question…
• How many of you at least once a day complain of the way someone has treated you?
• Blame your bad mood on someone else?
• Blame your teacher for your grades or your boredom in school?
• Do you blame those around you for not doing your homework? “He Made Me”
• Why are you sad? Why are you mad? Do you hear yourself saying “They just don’t understand me?”
• Feelings are themselves are not wrong.. what do you do with them? Poor me? Or does it drive you closer to Jesus? If it does not – you WILL go around that mountain again.

The Israelites grumbles and complained – got to wander in the wilderness for 40 years – they did not believe the reports of the men of God.

If You’re Going To Change… You First Have To Know What You’re Supposed To Look Like!

Get in your Word!!!! If you do not read the ‘Manual’ – then how will you know what you are building.

Ever tried to build a swing set with the directions?

Imitators of Christ

Ephesians 5:1-13 (New Century Version)

1 You are God’s children whom he loves, so try to be like him.2 Live a life of love just as Christ loved us and gave himself for us as a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice to God.

3 But there must be no sexual sin among you, or any kind of evil or greed. Those things are not right for God’s holy people.4 Also, there must be no evil talk among you, and you must not speak foolishly or tell evil jokes. These things are not right for you. Instead, you should be giving thanks to God.5 You can be sure of this: No one will have a place in the kingdom of Christ and of God who sins sexually, or does evil things, or is greedy. Anyone who is greedy is serving a false god.

6 Do not let anyone fool you by telling you things that are not true, because these things will bring God’s anger on those who do not obey him.7 So have nothing to do with them.8 In the past you were full of darkness, but now you are full of light in the Lord. So live like children who belong to the light.9 Light brings every kind of goodness, right living, and truth.10 Try to learn what pleases the Lord.11 Have nothing to do with the things done in darkness, which are not worth anything. But show that they are wrong.12 It is shameful even to talk about what those people do in secret.13 But the light makes all things easy to see,

Shaking
You do not know what is inside of you until you get squeezed! When you squeeze an orange you should not get lemon juice. If you went to the store and bought a carton of milk to take home and make chocolate milk with. You get home and discover that inside the carton it’s buttermilk – and you CANNOT make chocolate milk with buttermilk! It’s the same with us, you will not know what’s inside you until God begins to shake you/open you up and you discover areas that have ‘buttermilk’ in them! He needs you to look at those areas because they will keep you from getting close to him and/or they will keep you from getting close to or loving the people He needs you to.

Hebrews 12:25-29 (New Century Version)

25 So be careful and do not refuse to listen when God speaks. Others refused to listen to him when he warned them on earth, and they did not escape. So it will be worse for us if we refuse to listen to God who warns us from heaven.26 When he spoke before, his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once again I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”[a]27 The words “once again” clearly show us that everything that was made—things that can be shaken—will be destroyed. Only the things that cannot be shaken will remain.

28 So let us be thankful, because we have a kingdom that cannot be shaken. We should worship God in a way that pleases him with respect and fear,29 because our God is like a fire that burns things up.

• Because He hears our prayers and knows our hearts and deeply wants us to be able to come close to Him, He begins to shake us.
• Remember God shakes our lives to expose things that are not from Heaven, those things that are keeping us from coming closer to Him.
• We cannot see a lot of those things for ourselves… “finding out what is acceptable to the Lord”.
• Shaking has a thousand forms, according to what is needed for each of us.

Thoughts

Isaiah 55:8-9 (New Century Version)

8 The Lord says, “My thoughts are not like your thoughts.
Your ways are not like my ways.
9 Just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

• In the midst of our shaking and wrestling God is reminding us that our ways are not His ways.. He thinks differently than we do and He takes care of things different than we do.

Wrestling

Genesis 32:24-30 (New Century Version)

24 So Jacob was alone, and a man came and wrestled with him until the sun came up.25 When the man saw he could not defeat Jacob, he struck Jacob’s hip and put it out of joint.26 Then he said to Jacob, “Let me go. The sun is coming up.”

But Jacob said, “I will let you go if you will bless me.”

27 The man said to him, “What is your name?”

And he answered, “Jacob.”

28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob. Your name will now be Israel,[a] because you have wrestled with God and with people, and you have won.”

29 Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.”

But the man said, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed Jacob there.

30 So Jacob named that place Peniel,[b] saying, “I have seen God face to face, but my life was saved.”

• Jacob wrestled so fiercely and long that his hip was dislocated!! How desperate are you for God to change your life, your identity?
• Ouch! Not a fun time… but Jacob wanted his blessing… he knew it was his time!
• He would not quit because of the pain. (prevailed doesn’t mean he beat God but he held onto God through the pain to get his blessing and identity.)
• He got his new identity! And a limp to go with it… marked by God
• Are you willing to walk with a limp? Are you willing to hold on to Him in the pain? Or do you care more about how you look to others? Being respectable!

The question is: Do you know when you’re wrestling with God? Are you willing? The greatest of the apostles had to learn how God worked and moved in their lives…

Even The Great Men And Women In The Bible Had To Go Through Training.

If you will look at the different characters in the Bible you will learn much in the way God trained them

Paul/Saul
• Persecuted Christians until God encountered him on the road
• Was a devout Jew, even brilliant, well respected – thought he knew God but
• He didn’t recognize Jesus. Jesus had to blind him to get his attention
• He was trained for some 13 years before he came out preaching and teaching.
Peter
• Cut of the guards ear and denied Christ. (Remember? Not me Jesus, I’ll never deny you – it must be the other guys – He didn’t know his own heart)
David
• With the sheep
• Chased by a crazy king,
• Lied, murdered and still called “a man after God’s own heart.” Why? He understood God.
• When he murdered Uriah and the prophet Nathan brought him a word from God, he understood that God had to bring judgment. He didn’t question God and whine. He understood God’s ways because he KNEW HIM. He took responsibility for his own actions and did not blame God.
